Outside and In, or Inside Out

My exhibit “Outside and in, or Inside Out: The Life of Lati” consist of art works that signify the way people perceive me on the outside, my outward character and personality. Other works describe and illustrate the traits and emotions I hide on the inside, feelings or deep thoughts. These works include paintings, sculptures, and ancient artifacts that I have discovered during my time at the Metropolitan Museum .I created this as way to compare the perceptions of myself from other people and also to invite others into my mind , my heart, and my life.
Best Friend Perception:Rubenstein, Bradley. Untitled (Girl with Puppy Dog Eyes). 1996. Photographs. Www.metmuseum.org. Web. 4 Dec. 2012.

*This was chosen because I was told my eyes were my way out of trouble. Often times one could tell my problems through the sadness in my eyes.  The eyes of the young girl in the painting seem sad and uneasy. In my case, as I have gotten older my eyes still big, but my pain nor anger, is easily revealed.

Fragonard, Jean Honoré. Young Woman Reading. : Later 1770s. European Paintings. Www.metmuseum.org. Web. 4 Dec. 2012.
*This young woman can represent me in a sense because my friends see me as intellectual, beautiful young woman who indeed does enjoy reading. This woman looked so intrigued as if she is reading a mystery or even a love story. Her face shows much hope and unawareness of things going on around her.

Fund,, Rogers. Gold Necklace with Crescent-shaped Pendant. 1st–3rd Century A.D. Www.metmuseum.org. Web. 4 Dec. 2012.

“Gold necklace with crescent-shaped pendant” represents my sense of style because I love accessories. Whether I am wearing sweatpants and sneakers or a lovely dress and pumps, I always have to wear a necklace or a pair of earrings.
Acquaintance Perception:

Klossowsk, Balthazar. Girl at a Window. 1938. Www.metmuseum.org. Web. 4 Dec. 2012.
*“Girl at a Window by Balthus (Balthazar Klossowski) is used to compliment my open minded attitude. I always look at the many options when taking on a task or even when trying to come up with a plan. The young girl is staring at the window showing her interest at what is taking place in the outside world rather than staying in the house.

Klossowski, Balthazar. Thérèse Dreaming. 1938. Paintings. Www.metmuseum.org. Web. 4 Dec. 2012.
*Thérèse Dreaming” also by Balthus (Balthazar Klossowski) shows another young girl lying back in a chair as she appears to be day dreaming. I am known to get lost in thought while others are conversing. Often times it is because I have a lot on my mind. Other times I am planning what my next step in life is going to be, whether it is for the next minute, day, or even month.

Smith, Margaret Tasher. Tiara. 1910–29. American or European. Www.metmuseum.org. Web. 4 Dec. 2012.

This can be used to show my elegant and mature attitude when I am dressing up to go somewhere. I was told that I should have been a princess because I was and always have been spoiled growing up. This tiara has beautiful metal and glass detailing with green leaves and studded flowers blooming from the base of the tiara. This tiara is so beautiful and shows that the creator of such an accessory really took the time to bring out its beauty.

My Perception:

Castiglione, Giovanni Francesco. A Congress of Animals. 1641–1710. Drawings and Prints. Www.metmuseum.org. Web. 4 Dec. 2012.
* This work shows my admiration for animals. I feel that they are such beautiful and interesting creatures who are all distinctive in their own way. The way the animals though all different are standing side by side as if they do not know the meaning or prey and predator.

Rubens, Peter Paul. Venus and Adonis. : Mid- or Late 1630s. European Paintings. Www.metmuseum.org. Web. 4 Dec. 2012.
* This art work shows the love and concern that Venus has for Adonis’s wellbeing. Helping her to keep him close, you can see cupid holding onto Adonis’s leg signifying the love she has for him. I see myself as a very loving person and I care for the wellbeing of others.

Gauguin, Paul. Tahitian Faces (Frontal View and Profiles). Ca. 1899. Drawings. Www.metmuseum.org. Web. 4 Dec. 2012.
*The three different profiles of the woman’s face shows how I tend to look at situations that I am facing. I tend to look at each perspective of the party involved rather than just being close minded and sticking to my own opinion.
My Emotional Side:

Dove, Arthur. Sentimental Music. Ca. 1913. Drawings. Www.metmuseum.org. Web. 4 Dec. 2012.
* When feeling down I often listen to music and then write poems to express how I feel. Often times I create my own pieces of music that describe the emotion I am feeling at the time. This drawing I would say describes me very well when it comes to nonverbally expressing how I feel.

, Judit. Outburst. 1956. Paintings. Www.metmuseum.org. Web. 4 Dec. 2012.
*I chose this because it is pretty self-explanatory. The way she spread the colors across the canvas as if it were pieces of shattered glass describes my attitude and times of anger. Sometimes unknowingly I become very standoffish when angry because I do not like to express how I feel. On the inside however I feel the need to scream and let out the steam that is built up inside of me.

Drouais, François Huber. Boy with a House of Cards. 1965. Www.metmuseum.org. Web. 4 Dec. 2012.

.*I chose this work because though I am not a young, as a young girl and still today, I enjoy exploring my creativity. The young boy seems very happy and proud of the building he has created. This is the same feeling I enjoy experiencing with creating my own works of art, from music, poetry, down to making my own jewelry from parts of old accessories.

Field Trip #5

When looking at this statue the first thing I get remeinded of is well of course, Federick Douglass himself. I always admired having the same last name as  a former slave with the same ethnicity as myself. Also because Federick Douglass has changed the lives of many around the world. He is also a great author. Gabriel Koren was born in hungary and has been sculpting many African American leaders and thinkers since she moved to New York City. This statue is placed on Frederick Douglass Boulevard and Cathedral Parkway, Manhattan for all to see and indule in its meaningful beauty. Nomatter the place, I do not believe that I would have percieved this statue any other way than for what it is. She is known for also sculpting Malcolm X in granite. I find this piece well deserved as well as inspiring.

Les Reaction Field Trip #4

Visiting the Chelsea galleries and then visiting the Lower East Side galleries i realized that it shared many differences as well as similarities. I personally liked the Chelsea galleries much better. The gallery in the Lower East that left most of an impression was the one titled "untitled". It struck me as not being completely finished and under construction because of its appearance. I am sure many of my classmates can relate and would strongly agree. Most galleries are very clean and kept. The floors seemed unpolished and things were placed sort of in the middle instead of each piece having a place. The Chelsea galleries were more clean and well put together. The one I liked the most was the Lyon Weir Gallery. This is where i found the piece " Sovereign" -Aaron Nagel. This piece was very clean and looked much like a photography than a painting. I do not believe many of the curators from this gallery would approve or agree with those of the Lower East Side galleries. You can tell they have very different perspectives when it comes to art. The Chelsea galleries were in a more private kind of area but still looked as though it was apart of the city. I noticed that people traveled more in groups but in the Lower East people seemed to walk more alone and were rushing.  I also noticed that the galleries in the Lower East Side, paintings as well as art were much smaller than those in Chelsea. Besides my view of differences above they each had many interesting artworks and still showed what art meant to the artist. To conclude this reaction i would say that the Chelsea galleries are more interesting and fit my personal interest and taste as it would do so for many curators who may visit.

Chelsea Gallery Reaction Field trip #5

*When visiting the Chelsea galleries I found  that not each gallery was the same. The assignment this week was to choose two works of art , one that we would buy as an art collector and one we would not. I decided to choice a work of art from the Lyon Weir Gallery . If I were an art collector, my work of choice would be "Sovereign" -Aaron Nagel. When viewed with a closed mind this art Is shown with just a naked woman sitting on a chair  posing, To one with an open mind it is so much more. I would choose this because I believe that the beauty of a woman should and can be expressed in many ways. Woman are sometimes afraid to express themselves in many ways, this painting shows a woman with courage and confidence to say "this is me , this is who I am". I found out that "Sovereign " expresses Nagels admiration for oil paintings , it's medium, and traditions which helped him to create the female form.
"The nude does not simply represent the body, but relates it, by analogy, to all structures that have become part of our imaginative experience." (Kenneth Clark, The Nude: A Study in Ideal Form)

Aaron Nagel: Triumph, 2012
Oil on canvas, 38 x 62 inches

_*Being an art collector also means being able to depict which works would be more profitable if shown and which aren't. one work that is an example of such is one shown in the Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery. The exhibition is called "BUILDING" in which it contains a variety of large bricks  that I found had no significance. It just made me feel that something is incomplete. I do not believe that the artist makes much of a good investment but then again some could never really tell. I for one would not show such in my gallery if I actually had one. If that was the case I could just take some leaved and twigs from outside and create my own exhibition.

Desgin in our life . Field trip #2

_*For the second field trip we went to the MoMA again, this time for a different assignment. We were assigned the task of find four works of art, two we found to be highly functional and two we found non-functional. I started my search for my works on the sixth floor first because it was something new to me, children growing by design. In the middle of my search I realized that I had no clue what exactly I was looking for. I decided to start my search on the third floor instead, there I found a better understanding as well as my four works

_* Most of the art shown was geared towards household designs so I found it all to be functional in some way. What stood out to me most had to have been the giant helicopter hanging down in the air. I found the Bell-47DI helicopter to be highly functional because even though airplanes are more popular and convenient, helicopters still served and serve some purpose. They are even still used as a mode of transportation in some areas of the world. Helicopters were used for traffic servalliance, delivery of mail, and crop spraying as well as pest control. Police offers and rescue crews even use helicopters to search for and rescue those in need.it would be quite ridiculous to try to do such in an airplane.

_*Another work on display I found to be highly functional is "truck:Utility14 ton 4x4(M38AI) jeep. I find this highly functional because much like the helicopter it is another important mode of transportation. This jeep was designed for use by the United States Army during World War II . I realized that the jeep has no doors or roof. I soon found out the nonexistence of the doors made it easier to jump in and out of the jeep during combat. In tht time and still today , jeeps are highly functional and of good use.

_*The work I found to be nonfunctional is the "Three-legged side chair ". To me it had no greater value or meaning than any other chair that Watson display. There were much fancier and well designed pieces of furniture there that made this one look so ordinary. The only difference and significance would be that it had three legs instead of the normal four. Still very nonfunctional in my opinion.

_*the last piece I find nonfunctional is "fork,1950". I say this because yes, they are forks, but they can not be of much use if each of the three forks are bent in ways most unusable. What is the port of a fork if it cannot be used to its original purpose? I can't say they aren't interesting to look at but highly functional they are not. It does on the bright side ,make me wonder what the artist attempted to eat three times that caused this sort of deformity. Perhaps they two, were bent out of shape.

Art And Identity - Field Trip#1

On a recent field trip to the MOMA with my class, I was able to encounter all different views on art. It opened my eyes and allowed me to become even more open minded. The assignment was to look up three types of individual identity, cultural identity, and the identity of historical pieces. While looking around I found many pieces that fell into each category. The three that stood out the most would be : The Sleeping Gypsy by Henri Rousseau (French, 1844–1910) ,Stardoll (for Parkett No.54) Mariko Mori (Japanese, born 1967), and Van Gogh Starry Night 1889.

The Sleeping Gypsy by Henri Rousseau (French, 1844–1910) in my perspective, represents individual identity because it portrays a woman laying sleep in what seems to be an unknown place in the middle of nowhere with no direction. During slumber danger approaches yet does not take an uprising which could easily lead to her. It is easy to assume that the woman is a musician with her instrument lying next to her and what may be a vase of some substance close behind. The painter may have used this as a way to express the emotions of being lost, problems uprooting, and his artistic side, but using the image of a woman.

For cultural identity the artwork that stood out for me was the work Stardoll (for Parkett No.54) Mariko Mori (Japanese, born 1967). The doll is dressed in a Japanese pop music sort of fashion. The fabric as well as the style of the clothes and hair is being used to emulate that of mostly the young crowd that take part in such trend. Noticing that the doll has headphones on and is carrying what seems to be a microphone it leads me to believe that the doll was made for a famous Japanese artist.

Last Being historical identity, Van Gogh Starry Night.1889, This painting I consider historical for the simple fact that Van Gogh accomplished captivating what many would view as just a regular view of the night sky and made it his own. People who view this painting who are indeed open minded would realize that each brush stroke, color, and the depth are what brings out the significance of the image. I consider this historical because no matter the age, it may come a time in life where one would come across this picture and be able to remember it for its beauty.

Good Art vs.Bad Art

Good art is the idea of expressing ones selves in a wide range of shapes, lines, sculptures, pieces of other images, ect. nGood art can be looked at in different perspectives. It can often be discussed, stirring the mind of each viewer and makng it almost impossible for one not ask "why.?". Good art is art that u can connect with on a personal level, having very indifferent views as opposed to what they are usually a costumed to. Getting simple minded viewers as well to now become open minded and subjective is the objective of good art. Good art is also being able to step outside of the box not worrying about the negative comments that may come forth.

There is no real deffinition of "Bad art". I believe its all about how one takes in the piece they are viewing. On the other hand SIMPLE art is the act of failing to take something simple and make it something beyond what it actually is. If one can not connect to or understand what they are viewing then its easy to just look at it for what it is without any connection or deeper feelings. It is not enough to know what you have created if it does not reach the heart nor mind of others. Another example would be a overtley used/common idea in each peice, thus termintating what use to be known as art.
